Concordance: software for concordancing and text analysis

How to obtain the software

Licensing

Concordance is fully copyrighted commercial software.

The unregistered version is freely available for download.  You may try it out for personal evaluation only for 30 days, after which it will cease to work unless you register.  The unregistered version is fully functional, but adds 'Unregistered' messages to the files you create with it.  You may not distribute or publish materials which you make with the unregistered version, nor may you put them on the Web. You may not use the unregistered version as part of an educational course, either as teacher or as student, nor install multiple copies of it, nor make it available to others.  You are bound by further licence terms and conditions in the program's help file: please read them carefully.

If more than one person will be using the program at the same time, you must register a copy for each of them. If you want to install the program on more than one computer, you must buy additional copies. This applies even if you want to use one copy at work and another at home. Prices for additional copies are low. And upgrades are free to registered users for the foreseeable future.

Instructors at recognised educational establishments can arrange to purchase copies for their own students at $40 each, provided they themselves are already registered users of Concordance and are willing to handle the purchasing arrangements on behalf of their students. Please get in touch by e-mail.

When you download and/or open the file with Internet Explorer and Windows XP Service Pack 2 you may see a popup message entitled "Security Warning". The warning is a result of changes made by Microsoft in Service Pack 2 and has nothing to do with the files from this website. You can safely ignore the warning.

Installation

Upgrading to the new version for existing users:

System requirements

The software is for Windows XP, 2000, and NT 4.0 and Windows ME, 98, and 95. It currently runs on Windows Vista with a couple of issues that will be addressed during 2008. See latest news for more detail on Windows Vista.

On Windows XP, 2000, and NT 4.0 administrator privileges are needed to install the trial version of Concordance, but the registered version can be run with an ordinary user account.

The minimum amount of RAM required will depend on the configuration of your system. As with Windows in general, the more RAM, the better it will work, but Concordance is designed to be sparing of memory even when handling large files, and if your system runs other Windows programs well, it should have enough RAM to run Concordance.

The software uses around 4MB of disk space when installed. Making concordances to large texts can use a lot of disk space!

Macintosh users: There is no native version for the Mac, but plenty of users have reported that the program runs on a Mac using a PC emulator, though this may be slow. A few people have encountered problems, so I don't make promises about Concordance's suitability for the Mac. The 30-day free trial will enable you to discover whether it works well for you. Please note that the lack of a native Mac version does not imply I have anything against the Mac: it's just that the programming tools to produce a Mac version do not exist.
